1. I begin my paintings with a small sketch in my artist’s sketch pad. It’s here I work out the composition and decide what size I want the original painting to be. I work from reference photos I take myself or that a friend or family member has taken and given to me.
A neighbor and friend was so generous and allowed me to photograph his bison herd. These are two of many reference photos I took one day.

3. I then begin to fill in the highlights and start to add some color. I continue doing this, building up layer upon layer of color.

4. I finally decide I have added enough color and begin to add some details. I darken some areas and lighten some others. It’s at this time that I will do the eyes of the animal.
